Is it Really Worth It?

Published by justathought at 4:43 pm under On The Job Edit This

I was talking to a young lady today about how crazy her work situation is right now.  She is putting in 15 hour work days and feels like the hamster on the wheel. . . .always running and getting no where.  She has a son who is five years old and he seems to be getting placed on hold as she tries to “fix” the mess that has become her job.  My heart goes out to her, but at the same time I wonder why she is killing herself.  The one thing that could “fix” her situation is the one thing the company won’t give . . .more staff.  In this time of economic strife, all companies are trying hard to do more with less.  I think the thing they fail to realize is that when you cut your staff you dilute your service.  A rubber-band can only stretch so far before it pops.  All around me I am seeing the evidence of the strain on my department.  I am trying my best to stay upbeat.  Letting my work environment define my attitude will ensure me a fast ticket to the loony bin.

As I worked a few hours today I found myself communicating with this young lady and asking her was it worth it?  She is too young to be as frustrated and on edge as she currently is . . . . .is a paycheck worth losing her sanity?  I think not!

Oh how I can relate. I left my job of 5 years a few years back because I had to go on medical leave from the same situation. They let people go and piled the work on me. There were a few others in different departments that ended up physically ill as I did.

I was told by a few people that I was too young to put up with that. I’m a bit older now, but I learned that I won’t put up with that again. My health is not something I am going to gamble because they won’t hire more employees.
